Opportunities Everywhere

With the school year ending and summer approaching, there are many opportunities this summer that all athletes should consider. Mainly, the opportunities are for fall sports so that they can be ready for their next season at Phoenix High School. These sports include cross country, soccer, football, and volleyball. Now, here is what is available this summer.

To start off, cross country is providing summer practices after school. These are completely optional besides the last couple weeks of August. The team starts to practice on June 16th at 8:00 am to 10:00 am and they meet at the bus loop ramp at Phoenix High School. After the 17th of June, the practices will be five days a week, Monday through Friday. Summer running is a fantastic way to shape up new runners or get previous runners back into routine. Make sure to bring a water bottle and running clothes for each practice.

Next, soccer will be practicing during the summer as well. For the girls, they will be practicing on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at Colver Field. The boys will practice at the same time on the same day as well, except they will be at the US Cellular Park. Including this, there will be a skills camp sometime during August, but to get more information go to the Saturday practices.

In football, they will be having weight training this week. Additionally, August will be the month all football players should start practicing. To find out where and what time the weight training is, talk to Mr. Carvalho or email him at neill.carvalho@phoenix.k12.or.us.

Lastly, volleyball will have open gyms on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Phoenix High School. However, on Thursdays there will be weight training from 5:00 to 6:00 and then it will shift to open gym. These start now, so feel free to join on the summer practice anytime. These practices are very encouraged for people, even ones who have never played volleyball before. There are also camp opportunities, but if interested you must talk to Coach Robin Akpan at the open gym practice.

Overall, there are many opportunities for this summer. All student athletes are encouraged to have some fun in the sun while getting ready for next year. Also, many people who plan on playing a sport next year can start practicing early. This also goes for the people who have never even played a sport. Good luck this summer!
