Emergency Care and Prevention off to a Good Start!

Carolena Campbell, a teacher here at Phoenix High School for two years, offers Recreational PE, Body Works, Health Occupation, Fitness and Toning, and Emergency Care and Prevention. Emergency Care and Prevention is offered to all students, freshmen through seniors. It is only offered second and seventh period. Both second and seventh period classes have around thirty students each. Every semester more and more students are signing up, so it’s a first come, first served situation, meaning not everyone who wants the class gets to take it, making this a very popular elective.

Emergency Care and Prevention, also called E-care, has many opportunities such as certification for First Aid and CPR and offers two college credits. In E-care students learn about sports injuries, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), first aid, and CPR. Visitors and speakers range between the fire department, a Hazmat Team, a physical therapist, athletic trainer, and a chiropractor. Ms. Campbell has said “field trips are still a work in progress and hopefully in the future there will be some.” She also said that Phoenix High School is one of two schools that offer Emergency Care and Prevention in Southern Oregon, the other being Grants Pass, which makes this a rare opportunity. This is great for anyone who wants to enter the medical field. E-care has also sparked a lot of interest for the students who have taken this class. Should you get the chance, make sure you take this class.
