The 2016 Wrestling and Swimming season has already started for both girls and boys at Phoenix High School. Both sports have just recently started competition in the Skyline conference. Come support your Pirates as the teams compete, working their way to districts.

The swim team is doing very well this season, especially considering the harsh practice environment they have faced this year. It can almost be said that our boys have the best team in Southern Oregon. That’s because they won the All Rogue Valley meet on January 2. The boys also won the All Skyline meet last weekend to continue their streak of 15 consecutive wins. The Phoenix boys broke a 16 year old Skyline Record in the 200 medley relay at that meet. The team is on course to break the school record in that event also. There are at least two individuals who should make top 10 at 4A state, along with a couple relays. Our girls team was second at All Skyline and has two individuals ranking in top 10. The girls have lower numbers than boys and our skill depth isn’t there yet to beat the bigger powers in our district, but they still have proved many wrong and are well on their way to making a top three team finish at Districts.

For wrestling news, on January 6th at Crater High School, Phoenix had one of their best non-league matches. Cedar King, Jessie Daniels, Garrett Truex, and Trace Vega all had wins over Crater helping the team advance in conference. On their meet on January 16th vs. Eagle point, Cedar King and Garrett Truex both had wins over

Eagle Point. The next upcoming event for Phoenix wrestling will be held here at Phoenix High School tomorrow, January 23rd, so come out and support your Pirates! While the wrestlers might face many challenges this year, it should prove to be an overall fun and exciting year for the team.

Swimming and Wrestling both have events this weekend. The Phoenix High school swim team for boys and girls will begin at 11:00 am at the Medford Ymca. Districts for Swimming will begin on February 12th time, although the place is still being decided. The upcoming Wrestling match will be held at Phoenix High School January 23rd at 1:00pm. Wrestling’s districts duals will be February 10th at Klamath union high school- time is TBA.  Come support your pirates and watch both teams as they go on their journey to districts.
