With the fall in the past, it’s now time for the present! We welcome back the competitive and refreshing atmosphere of winter sports with excitement at Phoenix High School. Winter sports will be gifting students, families, and the community with interesting game play. From amazing three pointers to taking down opponents on the mat, every game this year will be worth watching. All athletes are delighted that the most wonderful time of the year has great opportunities for them to show off skill. The sports of interest this season are basketball, swimming, wrestling, and winter cheer. Before their season starts it is important to know how they all did last season, how to join, and figure out which seniors are on the teams.

To start off, the varsity boys last year fought hard to obtain victories. However, their season resulted with a score of 3-20. Similarly, the girls team went 5-17. Just because of some loses doesn’t mean optimistic views for this year’s basketball teams are nonexistent. People who haven’t tried basketball yet should discover if they have a hidden talent that Phoenix could really show off. To join boys basketball this year, teams practice at 6:00pm-8:00pm. Girls basketball teams practices at 3:45pm-5:45pm. Some seniors this year are very excited about this season. Kallen Peterson states,”I can’t wait to be able to play with my team this year,”. Additionally, Willow Tous commented that she,”will never want the season to be over”.

Also, swimming is another sport ready to dive into training. Before the season started, there were conditioning practices in the weight room everyday after school for a couple weeks. However, now they go to The Daniel Meyer Pool in Ashland at 5:15pm-7:15pm. Previously, in 2016-2017 four boys made it to state and placed 6th. Now, the team is hoping to go even further in victories and perhaps place higher in state. A couple of our star seniors have interesting goals to achieve by the end of the season. Ethan DeVey plans to,”swim in some of the varsity tournaments,” and Melissa Monroe wants to,”get a high place in one of our tournaments.”

Subsequently, wrestling has started to train for tournaments. Wrestling is a combat sport involving grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throwing, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. This sport is popular among the guys. One Senior that will enjoy his last year in wrestling is Ismael de la Torre he says the best part of wrestling is,”Creating a family with everyone in the team and having fun”. Last year Emma Truex won first place in the women’s wrestling division and is striving to obtain it once again this school year. We wish our wrestling team the best during this winter season.

Our cheer team did great during the fall, and now they’re getting pumped up for their winter season. This year, they have recruited a good amount of lower classmen, one of which is Emily Waggoner who says, “I felt that I was meant for cheerleading, and I know I can catch on fast, which I did”. She also commented that she enjoyed it and that it was, “fun being able to be a role model and presenter of our school.” The team practices 3-4 days a week from 4:30-5:00pm, and have been working hard and constantly improving. Winter Cheer even acquired new uniforms through all of their hard work and fundraising. As a matter of fact, they have another fundraiser coming up soon to help get to competitions. They will be bagging at Rays on Saturday the 18th from 12 – 5pm, and Sunday the 19th from 1 – 6pm. Make sure to drop by and show your support.

We are all excited to see what these sports bring and are ready to support and cheer them on during their games, matches, and meets. The seniors will give it their all and make a great season out of it and freshmen are excited to join the pirate family. Dedication and persistence will be seen throughout the season and will bring us back victory.
