The PHS track team is shaping up to have a great season with a balance on both the girls and boys teams. The teams will be competing at the top of the Skyline Conference district. Mr. Boone, the track team’s coach, explains, “Our team this year shows great promise in the future with a large freshman class turnout.” Coach Boone added the team has “a solid senior and junior core group of athletes providing leadership and foundation.”

During the 2014-2015 season, many individuals set school records. Last year, Randy Mena placed fourth with 4:09.18, Leif Amundsen placed eighth, and Parker Cook placed tenth with 4:19.84 in the 1500 meter race last year. In addition, the boys team participated in the 4×200 Relay. As a team, Jordan Douglas, Ethan Shepard, Zackary Robinson, and Cole George completed the relay with 1:29.32, placing third in the PHS team records.

In the discus last year, Cole George placed first with 146’ 9.00 and Jordan Grace placed sixth with 113’ 8.00. The boys team also competed in the high jump throughout the 2015 season. As a result, Jordan Douglas placed third in PHS records with 5’ 9.00 and Thomas Skaff tied with 2014 and 2011 competitors at seventh place with 5’ 0.00.

Similarly, the girls team also changed our school records during 2015 in the 100 meter dash, with Audrey Hazel placing first with 12.74 and Sydney Amundsen in third place with 13.44. Likewise, Lindsey Burns placed fifth with 13.53. Then, in the 1500 meter race, Emma Amundsen placed first with 4:48.13 and Shayla Potratz in ninth place. Shayla Potratz also placed second in the mile with 5:45.20 and fifth place in the 3000 meter race with 11:21.98. After a close call with a Henley runner, Emma Amundsen finished first in the 3,000 meter race, also breaking former PHS student’s Nevina DeLuca’s record from 2013.

A girls relay team made up of Audrey Hazel, Lindsey Burns, Danielle Jantzer, and Sydney Amundsen, placed first on our school records in the 4×100 Relay with 51.21. Afterward, Emma Hickman earned first in the shot put and second in the discus last year. Maddie Landis placed fourth with 29’ 2.00 in the shot put. Subsequently, she also placed ninth in the discus during the 2015 season.

Our team has been preparing for two weeks for their first meet. During their practices, which are everyday from 3:50 to 6pm, the team does circuits, weight training, and core workouts. Distance runners tend to go on 30 to 50 minute runs and sprinters run up hills for about ten minutes. Throwers are also practicing everyday with the runners.

The track team’s first meet of the season will be next Monday, March 14, against the Crusader Relays at St. Mary’s High School. Clearly, the track teams will have a successful season, so come out and support our Pirates!
