With the end of the winter sport season students and coaches are getting ready for the upcoming spring sport seasons. Phoenix offers many spring sports such as softball, baseball, golf, spring wrestling, and track and field. Tennis is also a sport that is offered, but at the moment it is a club.

Mr. Cornet is Phoenix’s new head coach for track. As many of you may know Mr. Cornet also coaches cross country. This will be his 26th year teaching track. Before coaching at Phoenix Mr. Cornet coached at Ashland, South Medford, and Portland. His priority for this years track season is to make sure that everyone is having a good time and have lots of fun throughout the season. “Track gives you an opportunity.” Track like many other sports brings people together who also enjoy the same sport. It’s a chance to make new friends. Track also can lead to something in the future. From being able to do anything track related daily such as running, to even have the chance to coach a track team at a high school, college, or middle school.

Cornet’s biggest success in his opinion is to have students return to track the next year. Since last year there has been three times the amount of students that have signed up for track this upcoming season. With nearly 60% off signups from students who are new to track and field. The majority of the 60% being sophomores. Like other sports try outs are the first week of the sport. “The first week will be hard, but after that it’ll be fun.”

Track season starts February 27th. Like all the sports offered at Phoenix there are rules and regulations in order to be able to participate in a sport. By OSAA rules you must be passing five classes. In order to start track season you must have passed five classes from the last quarter. In order to be a player in track during the season you must be passing five classes during the 3rd and 4th quarter.

In summary come out and join track and field. It’ll be a good experience. You can sign up in Mr. Cornet’s room. Can’t wait to see you on the track field February 27th.
