Girls Be Ballin’

Now that fall is over it’s time to get started by reviewing how the girl’s basketball team is doing. Girl’s basketball is one of the most well known sports at Phoenix High School. The students tend to pack the whole gym with excitement, rooting for their team. Last year the girl’s varsity team didn’t do too well, ending with a record of 6-17 overall in games. They lost their playoff game to Klamath Union by a score of 75-53. Nevertheless, it’s a new year and Phoenix gets a fresh start for the girl’s basketball team.

In addition, Coach David Alexander leads the varsity team this year. Before their final departure from Phoenix, seniors Lindsey Burns, Ariana Segura, Keylene Ritter, Guillermina Rodriguez, Madelene Marroquin, and Meddie Lozano are all playing on the team. Mail Tribune has taken an interest in Keylene Ritter especially saying, in the article Kaylene Ritter is doing it all for Phoenix, she is the leader of the team with scoring “21.3 points” and having “5.3 rebounds”. When one goes and watches the Phoenix girl’s basketball game, be on the lookout for Ritter.

Also, they started off with a bang by winning against Eagle Point with a score of 48-46. Another highlight this year was a game on December 9th against Sweet Home, which ended in a pirate victory by a score of 79-33. Unfortunately, since December 22th they have yet to secure another victory, which puts them on a five game losing streak. However, the team has their hopes up for the next game against North Valley. Last year they won by one point, scoring 46-45, so hopefully they can break loose from their losses and win some upcoming games.

Furthermore, the goals of the girl’s basketball team are important to acknowledge. From the varsity team, Ariana Segura states, “To persevere as a team throughout the whole season. That is basically our motto this year,” and is the biggest goal. As for JV, Carina Flores says a critical goal for their team is “To make good passes, to get open, and to have great rebounds.” Lastly, in JV2 Elizabeth Casteo  responds with, “Our main goal this year is to win a game because we haven’t won yet.” Clearly, all of these ladies and their teams have goals that Phoenix High School wishes them to achieve by the end of the season.

Lastly, while the season continues the girls are trying to pick up their game and do better than last year. However, this season they will need a lot of support since their games so far are not going too well. The next home game is against Klamath Union at 6pm on January 27th. The girls have not yet played against this team and it is encouraged to come cheer them on during this game. Go Lady Pirates!
