Final Splash

With the beginning of the 2nd semester we are beginning to head into the final few days of the winter sport season. With the end coming near, many sports are trying their best in their final days of the season. This can include doing their best at districts and trying their best to reach state. One of these sports that have recently gone to districts was the swim team.

Swim like many other winter sports start on the late autumn days of November. Swim isn’t like many other sports. Many winter sports such as basketball and wrestling practice indoors. Since we do not own an indoor pool, swimmers spend their early mornings swimming laps in an outdoor pool in Ashland in the freezing cold. No worries the pool is heated. Throughout their season swim has traveled far and near in order to participate in meets. Some of these taking place at the Medford YMCA while other swim meets have taken place as far as the Oregon coast or their latest district meet, North Bend. During the entire season the swim team have been pushing themselves to their limits to meet their PR’s in order to become the best and this past week they were tested at districts.

Districts took place last week with the team leaving on the 8th in order to arrive at North Bend before their meets on the 10th and 11th. Overall, our swimmers fought a hard battle during the district meet. Our girls swimmers swam a hard meet, but sadly tied for 8th with Klamath Union with a score of 44. Our boys also placed 8th place with a score of 62. During the two day event both teams came in 6th during the 400 free relay. On the other side of the pool, Alec Shepherd came in 3rd in his 100 fly and 2nd on the back. Even though swim didn’t come out with a victorious win at the end, 18 out of 21 athletes were able to set new PR’s at the end of the season. Meaning that they have new records to beat in the next season of swim.

Congrats swimmers on an amazing season. Not only that but also dealing with the freezing temperatures of those early swimming practices. Congrats for surviving and good luck to those that will be heading to state and representing our school. This is a sad end to the season, but no worries we have a whole batch of games and meets this upcoming spring season of sports.
