Winter Spirit Week

Every school has its own traditions and means to show off school spirit throughout the holiday season. During the final week of  the 2015 year, Phoenix High School will be hosting their annual Spirit Week activities. Many students aren’t familiar with how the spirit days are planned, so we had a word with the Leadership counselor Ms.Flores to gather some insight into the process of planning this final week before Winter Break. She said, “We made a big list with everyone’s ideas of potential spirit days. Then, we came together as a class to cross off ideas that have either been used in years past or came to a unanimous agreement on eliminating.”

To kickoff this year’s spirit week, Monday, December 14, the theme is Pajama Day. Students are encouraged to come in their pajamas to school and gain spirit points for their class. Also on Monday at 9:00am, Leadership will be serving pancakes to the student body in the P.E. commons.

On Tuesday, December 15, the theme is Favorite Holiday Movie Day, which means that students should dress up as a character or wear a shirt with a holiday movie reference. For example, do you have a Rudolph nose and antlers? Want to dress like Buddy the Elf? Or are you feeling Grinchy? Get creative with your outfit. This is your day!

On Wednesday, December 16, students are encouraged to dress as twins with another peer or to show off their “squad” by getting a group of friends together and dressing up in similar clothes. See if your squad has what it takes to beat the basketball team for most people dressed alike!

Thursday, December 17, is the traditional Ugly Sweater Day. Some memorable ugly sweaters have puffball snowflakes, blinking lights, bells, and even parts of a real Christmas tree. Later on in the day, there will be an ugly sweater contest during the last assembly of the 2015 year.

To wrap up Spirit Week, on Friday, December 18, students have the opportunity to show off their holiday cheer by wearing hats, sweaters, jingle bells, elf suits, Santa suits, or anything holiday related.

Students are not the only individuals who can earn spirit points for their class; our staff can as well. Each teacher on campus is assigned a grade level to help gain spirit points. As Spirit Week approaches, teachers plan how they will participate in these festive activities. Talking to Mrs.Campbell, she said “I’m especially excited for Ugly Sweater Day, Squad Day, and Festive Day. I have plans with other teachers to dress alike for Squad Day, and on Festive Day I feel like I have a lot of freedom and opportunity to get creative with my outfit.”

Even though Spirit Day is months away in May, it’s never too early to start gaining spirit points to get your class to the ultimate launch for the summer. Let’s say goodbye to 2015 the right way. Let’s go Pirates!
