With a great start to the winter season, we are welcomed by the sound of music performed by the very own Phoenix High School band and choir classes. This year we have lots to see from our very talented classmates. Like many shows in the past, band and choir students spend hours and weeks practicing in order to make the show a success.

The choirs went first at the concert. Mr. Brock chose unique songs for both of the choirs winter performances. The two choir classes here at PHS have been rehearsing for a long time just to perfect their performances. The Concert Choir performed Kuwa Na Krismasi Njema, Come to the Music, Pie Jesu with Bailey Cory and Kalina Carrithers as soloists, The Innkeeper’s Carol, Halleluia a duet performed by Bailey Cory and Kalina Carrithers, and The Santa Claus Polka. The Advanced Treble Choir performed after the concert choir. They performed I Will Arise And Make Music, Set Me As A Seal with Sofia Trigolo as a solo, He Is Born, The Maiden’s Farewell, and What Child Is This? Both choirs overall did an excellent job at their performance this past thursday. The show also had a beautiful duet done by senior Bailey Cory and sophomore Kalina Carrithers, performing Hallelujah. We spoke with Bailey about why she wanted to do the duet and she responded with; “I chose a duet because I wanted to be brave my senior year.”

The band’s performance was after the choirs. They started their show by performing their 2017 marching band theme Dead Men Tell No Tales. Soloists include Katie Radley, Chandni Kaur, Brian Parker, and Tiffany Le. The Jazz Band performed after the marching band. They started off with The Defibrillator with Andrew Nordquist on trombone and Sagean Stoker on piano as the soloists for this song. Take 5 was their next song. Soloists include Isaiah Champagne on alto sax, Brody Bergstrom on trombone, Will Lowry on guitar, and Julian Koell on drums. Buffalo Wings was next with Sagean Stoker on piano Brody Bergstrom on trombone, Will Lowry on drums, and Fernie Camacho on drums as this songs soloists. Jazz Bands last song was Seven Mountains Mambo. The soloists were Andrew Nordquist, Isaiah Champagne, Jon Janakes on trumpet, and Julian Koell. After the jazz band, both the Symphonic and Concert Bands performed together. Songs include Kingsfold, All is Calm with Cameron Johnson playing the vibraphone as a soloist, and A Christmas Tale with Megan Forsyth and Andrew Nordquist as narrators.

Overall, it may be said that the concert was a total success with the help of all the performers, Mr. DeRoest and Mr. Brock who worked hard to present such a wonderful performance this year. Congratulations to all the students that participated in the winter concert yesterday.
