As just about everybody knows, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities to increase awareness and to raise funds for research. It also reminds women to be “breast cancer aware” for early detection. So on Wednesday October 28th, leadership students removed the red, white, and blue and got the students to go pink for our survivors, fighters, and those who we’ve lost. Those who wore pink gained spirit points for their class while still lighting up the halls of Phoenix High to show their support. Although the “Pink Out” was unexpected, the amount of students that participated was more than the school predicted. “Leadership wants this to become an every year thing,” said Astrid Onesto, leadership student at Phoenix High School. They’ve begun to plan ideas for next year’s Pink Out already, based on the success of this years campaign.

Other companies and groups have campaigned to raise money and help end cancer. They have marathons where people run and walk up to thirty-nine miles just to get their voices heard. NFL football goes big when it comes down to October and the Breast Cancer Awareness by selling apparel and using the hashtag “#nflpink.” Another example of the NFL’s contributions are how certain teams wear pink for the whole month and referees use something as simple as a pink whistle just to raise money for our fighters. Following the example of the NFL on Friday October 23rd, our football players made sure to wear pink, and everyone in the stands and on the track did so as well. They’ve been wearing pink socks and other gear this whole month to show their support.

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. So why is it important to have a whole month to spread the word? Because doctors, friends and even your loved ones can use this opportunity to get checked and detect the cancer at an early stage.
There are many ways people can get involved in such a strong movement, such as the “Pink Out Loud” by Paul Mitchell campaign and making purchases at many local store who ask to round up change as a donation and have the money go to the cancer victims. The PHS leadership students found their own way to help youth get their voices out.
