Do you want to increase your knowledge about the healthcare field? Well, at PHS there are classes offered here on Health Occupations. We have Emergency Care & Prevention and Body Works and just this year they introduced a Health Occupations Lab.

Emergency Care & Prevention is a semester long class that gives you learning experience on real life medical emergencies. Students who take this class will become more knowledgeable on prevention and care of emergency situations. Such as First Aid and administering CPR, PHS is fortunate in having this class because many other schools don’t have this kind of opportunity available.  Students also learn disaster preparedness and what to do in case of a fire, earthquake, flood, etc. This class may be graphic because you are dealing with bodily injuries, and sometimes potentially life threatening situations, it’s a good class to take just to learn how to deal with something incase you happened to have a real  emergency. This course also offers the opportunity to get a certificate through the American Heart Association. If students pass all their skill tests and unit tests, they have the opportunity to walk out of Emergency Care and Prevention certified in CPR.

Body Works is also a semester long class that takes you through the human body and how it all works. In this class students with learn all about how the human body functions. In addition, students will learn anatomy, as well as covering the basics of muscles and bone structures. This class is perfect for anyone wanting to explore anatomy and Physiology or is just curious to know more about the human body.

This year PHS has offered a new lab called the Health Occupations Lab. To take this lab, you would have to go through Emergency Care & Prevention as well as Body Works. This course allows students that are interested in the Healthcare industry to take online courses through Rogue Community College as part of their Basic Health Care Certificate such as Medical Terminology or exploring Careers in Health Care. A teacher will be there to support you in your college course work. But in order to receive credit for this course, students must pass the RCC placement test.

The teacher responsible for these classes here at PHS is Carolina Campbell, she is a 3rd year teacher here at PHS. The Health Occupations program is a broad term for all the classes related to the healthcare field. If you take these classes you can earn college credit and learn CPR certification and prevention. Also, there is a lot that students can learn about themselves, as well as things they can take with them after graduation. In Emergency Care & Prevention you can earn 2 college credits. 1 for first aiding and another for CPR. In the lab classes PHS offers you can earn 3 credits a peice. Student must first take the Health Occupations lab class before they can take Medical Terminology. Body Works is also encompassed in Health Occupations but we don’t offer college credits for it at this time. This program is an awesome opportunity for students if anyone is interested in pursuing healthcare. So if you are interested in the healthcare field, like a Paramedic, Doctor, Nurse etc. These are great classes to take!
