Math Team Equaling Success

An often overlooked institution here at Phoenix High School is the Math Team. Over the years, the Math Team has contributed many wins to the school’s success, and this year’s team expects no less of themselves. With three competitions already in the books, the team has brought back  1st, 2nd, and 3rd place wins! If any student is interested in having a part in these wins, there is always time to join.

The team still has one competition left at North Medford on March 10th before heading to Southern Oregon University where students will have the opportunity to win money and qualify for state. A typical math meet consists of four events, and each competitor takes part in two events to contribute points for his/her team. Each event is routinely a three-question quiz testing a specific skill such as geometry, algebra, trigonometry, etc., so students are able to pick their strengths and weaknesses. On top of this, there is a team event in which students learn the importance of working together and problem solving to solve one problem.

The majority of the team is led by seniors who have been participating for a few years, so Mr. Dougherty is looking for new faces and good mathematicians to help continue the team’s strong performance in the math meets.  There is no harm in trying, so if you are good at math and curious to learn more, give it a shot! It is also a great way to meet new friends who share a passion for math, so any student interested should talk to Mr. Dougherty about participating in the last two meets of the year to help contribute and prepare for a strong Math Team next year.
