So far, Phoenix placed 4th in Districts in Agriculture Sales with Hannah Brood, Alyssa Day, Chloe Staten, Elise Morris, and Lillian Tegner on the team. In addition, PHS had two teams in the Veterinary Science contest, consisting of Samantha Sacco, Jocelyn Burks, Zamora Martinez, Kazes Kuykendall, Rachel Carr, and Lola O’Connor. Also, Madison Dodd came in third and Jocelyn Burks placed fourth at Districts in Job Interviewing.

Furthermore, contests which will begin in April are Floriculture, Nursery and Landscape, Food Science, Meat Judging, Horse Judging, and Agricultural Mechanics.

All students are encouraged to join FFA. The only requirement is that you take at least one Agriculture class, from Mr. Kennedy or Ms. Walkup each school year. You do not have to raise an animal and it is not an expectation. FFA has something to fit everyone’s interests. Come join! Everyone’s welcome!

Greenhouse

Greenhouse is an elective class which has been working with the Farm to School Program and FoodCorps member this year. FoodCorps looks to increase the impact local foods have on the lives of school students statewide. According to foodcorps.org, 70% of schools that partner with FoodCorps measure healthier by the end of the school year.

During the first semester of Greenhouse, the class created a worm bin. A worm bin is a composting method using worms to recycle food scraps and other organic materials into valuable soil.

Now, in the second semester, the class is busy planting in preparation for their Mother’s Day Plant Sale, May 6/7. Don’t forget to check out their plants for any loved ones before May 7!
