Phoenix High School is lucky to have the opportunity to offer Culinary Arts as an elective to its students. The class is taught by James Janousek during third and fourth period. This quarter the students have been cooking “a lot of breakfast and egg dishes” said Janousek. Some of the dishes they’ve prepared include crepes, pancakes, scrambled eggs and omelettes. They have also done a little baking and plan on doing more of it in the next quarter. The students are having a good time, all while learning to create new dishes. They get to be creative with the foods they prepare, sometimes they even get to come up with their own style of a dish and name it. This allows the students to show off their creative side by creating a different type of art. The class overall has great attendance and the students work well together as a team. Mr. Janousek likes to refer to cooking as “the great equalizer.” In class the students have also been preparing themselves for their upcoming event “The Egg-Off.”

According to Mr. Janousek, the Egg-Off is “like a midterm for culinary art students” where the students will prepare an egg-centric dish. The Egg-Off will take place November 2nd and 3rd during the long periods. Many students are very excited to participate in this event as they come up with their own egg recipes. When students are done with the dishes,  Mr. Janousek will have people come in to the class to do some “taste tasting”on the dishes. These people will be the ones to ultimately grade the students on the grading rubric. The winner of the egg-off will not only get a good grade, but also a gift certificate for Dutch Bros.
