We’ve all heard of the big book that commemorates the entire school year. The book that everyone wants to buy, to remember, and to look back at their high school memories.

People love the pages they are in, and are not huge fans of the ones they are not in. While it is easy to point out the mistakes in the yearbook, have you ever stopped to wonder, how much time and effort the yearbook staff took to create the book that you are so quick to criticize. Our staff has to work outside the class constantly, whether it was taking pictures at all the school and sporting events or progressing their pages on their own time.

The class where the yearbook is made is Digital Journalism. In the class, students not only work on the yearbook, but they also work on the school news website. www.phtvnews.com, has six new articles uploaded about every two weeks. Phoenix High School is fortunate to have Jeff Rhoades as the media teacher. His guidance in the class, makes the school website excel. Being in the class is no easy job. We write the articles and also work on the media to go with it, such as a video and featured images.

Everyone in Digital Journalism this year contributed to the yearbook. Students would go out and take pictures and get coverage for all the sporting events, plays, concerts and club meetings here at PHS. Many students contributed to the yearbook but there were students in particular that really worked to create it, those individuals were: Ariana Segura, Sandra Hernandez, Guillermina Rodriguez, Meddie Lozano, and Piedad Carrera. The Digital Journalism class fortunately got outside sources such as Ana Redding, a math teacher at PHS, who contributed in providing football and basketball pictures, as well as the school’s facebook page.  that need credit because they also participated in this. A special shoutout to Miriam Arias, Astrid Onesto, Carina Carrera and Nayeli Esqueda, who helped work on a couple layouts in the yearbook. Mr. Akil, the attendance clerk contributed in providing names of students that we didn’t know.

One of the editors and Yearbook participant, Ariana Segura said that, “I have personally enjoyed my time being involved in the media classes available at PHS. Even if it is not noticeable to all the students, the yearbook has improved since it became a class, and I hope it continues getting better each year.” With Phoenix High School’s hardworking students, there is no doubt that the yearbook and school website will continue improving.

You can buy this memorable book at the front office or on www.jostens.com for just $40! Pirates buy your yearbook soon, recall all the memorable moments with great people.
