During football, basketball, or any sporting event, schools normally have the spirit to boost up their team’s confidence with a chant. But sadly, we discovered that throughout the years, Phoenix High School’s fight song has become a mystery to many of the staff and student body.

We went out to interview a variety of students to see if they knew our school’s fight song. Jesus Sixtos even asked, “We have a fight song?,” showing that many of our students aren’t even aware that the school has a song dedicated to boosting up our teams’ spirits. Brooke Ketner kept it short and simply said, “No.” Answers did not vary as we asked more students as many of them responded the same.

We also asked a variety of staff as well, some who have been here for years and others who are new to the scene at Phoenix. To our surprise, many of them were not aware of the lyrics to Phoenix’s fight song. Mrs.Green, one of our science teachers says, “No, I don’t know.” English teacher Ms.Singleton says, “I know what the band plays,” and Brenda, one of our school’s librarians says, “I don’t know all the words and I graduated from here.” Through this investigation, we now see that even staff members are not familiar with our fight song.

To our surprise we met up with a couple of students like Angel Teeple, and she said, “I know most of it and so do the rest of the cheerleaders.” Also some teachers say that they remember some of the lyrics but it’s a shame because when someone walks in to support our teams they can’t read the song that once hung in our gym.

For those who wonder how this song goes, here are the lyrics down below.

We’re Loyal to you Phoenix High

We’re Red, White and Blue Phoenix High

We’ll back you to stand

You’re the best in the land

And we know you will win Phoenix High

Go smashing ahead Phoenix High

Go crashing ahead Phoenix High

Our team is our fame protector

On boys,

On girls

For we expect a victory from Phoenix High

The purpose of a fight song is to let the other schools know that the Pirates are not going to give up anytime soon. Normally people sing to represent the pride students, staff, and even parents have for being apart of the Pirate community. It may not seem like a big deal for many here at Phoenix, but knowing the fight song is important because it increases school spirit, and unites us all as one.
