The Sound of Marching Band!

The hard work of Marching Band has consisted of a little blood, and a lot of sweat. For Color Guard, they can never forget the glitter. The amazing work of all these students are coming along nicely and their season is slowly coming to an end. The Band has been practicing since August, while Color Guard has been going since May. They practice after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they also sacrifice their Saturdays. To show their dedication, the Color Guard has even added extra practices on Mondays.

The band does a different show each year telling different stories. The theme for this year’s show is The Halloween Tree. The Halloween tree is about a boy who goes on a journey that will decide if he lives or dies. A group of his friends try to help him through the journey as it takes them through many different cultures and the origin of Halloween. It teaches these boys how this holiday has helped shaped civilization. The Halloween Tree itself sets as a metaphor for the historical confluence of all the traditions.

The band director Mike DeRoest has picked The Halloween Tree because he has always wanted to do a show that fit the Marching Band season. The music was arranged by Travis Moddison which consists of music from Nightmare Before Christmas by Danny Elfman and Danse Macabre by Camille Samson. The person who wrote drill was Jeff Bush. Drill is how the Band and Color Guard move and get into different shapes. The Marching band has a ton of solos with Bailie Brown in second movement, then Geo Beatus, Hannah Teague, Kaycee Parker, Caitlyn Hughes, and Megan Forsyth in third movement.

The Band and Color Guard travels to California for their competitions. They did amazing at Elk Grove with a third place trophy, while Color Guard placed second in their division and fifth overall. Their next competition will be at Folsom on the Fifth of November. Then, they will go to Napa on the twelfth of November where they hope to bring back a trophy as one of the top bands. They will also perform once more at the school on the twenty-first of October at the home football game.

Mr. DeRoest has some ideas for next year but is not willing to tell us just yet. DeRoest said, “I would really like to see everyone improve on confidence for this year and for next year. I would like to see a big boost in numbers because sections like percussion will be nearly gone.” He thinks staff, leadership, and drum majors are doing awesome, he would also like to thank everyone who has helped this year with Marching Band. He would like to give a special thanks to Ron for keeping him sane.

We wish the Band and Color Guard all the luck in the world, to have fun on the rest of their trips and to bring back first place trophies for our school!
