The Sign of a New Club

The American Sign Language club is a club here at PHS where you can learn american sign language and how to communicate with those who are deaf or hard of hearing. People who have this difficulty, use a lot of visuals to communicate with others. This is the top sign language used in the country.

Madelene Marroquin, a senior here at Phoenix High School, has taken the initiative to make this one of our school’s newest clubs. She started learning american sign language over the summer and heard of there being a club like this at RCC and thought it would be a great idea to make it a club at Phoenix.

Helping her with the club is Mr. Rhoades and college specialist Lexi Amrhein. The club usually meets on Tuesdays at lunch in Rhoades’s class in room N206, but Madelene is also aware of other clubs and is willing to make the day they meet flexible. She is still learning the language along with the students who are in the club. The club had their first meeting in October with 7 or 8 students showing up.

The club is based off of the basic everyday conversations in sign language, but Madelene is also letting people in the club help decide what they want to learn more in depth. What the club learns besides the language itself is the different cultures that the people live in when they are deaf or hard of hearing and how they live their lives.

This is not Madelene’s senior project but she thought that is might be a good skill for anyone to have when they meet someone who is deaf. This could also be a great skill for everyone to have in their life.

The club doesn’t have any upcoming events but will have guests come in every meeting to help out. After Madelene graduates, she hopes that she will be able to pick a group of people to take over because she has learned it’s really hard to run a club with only one person.

This club is really cool, and is a useful skill that will come in handy one day; you never know when you will run into a person who really needs your help and can only sign. This club is really fun and willing to work with whoever is dedicated to learning something new.
