December 8th was the Phoenix High School’s first band concert of the year. These students have been putting in effort since September to put this together and their efforts really showed at their amazing performance. If you didn’t go you really missed out on a wonderful evening.

The wonderful night started with concert band playing the First Noel arranged by Jeff Simmons. Ron Hart then came on to direct all the bands in African Dreams by Brant Karrick. Ron Hart is a student teacher and will soon be leaving; the band showed their appreciation to him by buying him a light up bow-tie. DeRoest then took over with the symphonic band and played The Polar Express by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard and arranged by Jerry Brubaker. The symphonic band played their last song The Eighth Candle by Steve Reisteter.

Percussion and pit took over the stage with buckets and played Recycle by Julie Davila. After the amazing piece Jazz band took over with five beautifully played pieces. They started their evening with Blue Bossa by Kenny Dorham arranged by Mark Taylor. Then they played Bag’s Groove  by Milt Jackson arranged by Mark Taylor as well. Que Pasa came next by Ralph Gingerly, after they proceeded with Blue skies by Irving Berlin arranged by Mark Taylor. The Jazz band ended their lovely night with Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder and was arranged by Mike Tomaro.

After all the performances by each band, they decided to end with The Halloween Tree which was the theme for this years marching band. The students circled around the theatre and performed the last song for the night for this concert. The band ended up getting a standing ovation in the end.

The choir concert will be tonight at 6:30 pm in the Rose Theatre. The two people who chose tonight’s music is Mr. Brock himself and senior Emily Johnson. The choirs have been practicing their music since September to make it a wonderful concert for people to enjoy tonight.

The beginning of the performance will have both concert and chamber choirs singing together with a song called Good Cheer. After that, the concert choir will be performing their songs. The music that concert choir is going to sing is A Distant Shore, Bidi Bom, The Lily and the Rose with solos by sopranos Savanah Rutter and Maggie Lujan, and At Christmas Time.

After they perform, the chamber choir performs next.  The music chamber choir is going to sing is Auld Lang Syne with Sonrisa Kuriyama on guitar, Carol of the Bells, White Winter Hymnal, Din Di Rin, Ocho Kandelikas with Cadence Rochlen on flute, and Gonna Rise up Singing. And at the very end, both choirs will perform together once more they’re going to be singing Amid the Falling Snow. After that, the choirs are going to sing a Holiday Sing-A-Long and they want the audience to join in.
Our music program is definitely something that our school is proud of. Don’t miss your chance to hear the choir sing if you did missed the band concert. Have a great winter break, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
