By Courtney Baker,

Phoenix High School has begun getting ready for all the events planned for this year’s Homecoming and Spirit Week. All students are encouraged to participate in this year’s Spirit Week, not only to help boost school spirit, but also to earn class points towards a field day at the end of the year.

Starting this Monday, October 5, students and staff are asked to show their school spirit by wearing PJ’s to school. Monday also gives students an opportunity to show support for their favorite sports team with Sports Day.  That evening, Phoenix’s volleyball players attempt to coach their class in a He-Man volleyball tournament starting at 7:30 pm in the big gym. Tuesday, the Pirates will be pairing with a friend to dress up as twins or wearing their best tie-dye shirt. The leadership students introduced a new dress up idea this year known as Wacky Wednesday. Wednesday will also be flannel day. That night is packed with plenty school-favorite activities. Starting with the 2nd annual homecoming parade, which will be filled with decorated floats from all clubs and sports represented at Phoenix High School. This is always a memorable event, as it brings the whole community together to celebrate homecoming. The parade begins at 6:00 pm and will start at Phoenix Elementary School and finish off at Phoenix High School. This will lead directly into that night’s Powder-Puff game, where the girls from each class are given the opportunity to show off the skills they’ve learned from of our very own Pirate football players in junior vs. freshman and senior vs. sophomore matchups. To finish off Spirit Week, students can show their school spirit by wearing class colors (freshman- red, sophomores- white, and juniors- blue) while seniors get to celebrate Spirit Week with Phoenix’s famous Toga Day. Leadership has a big Spirit assembly planned for Thursday to get the student body pumped for Friday Night’s football game and introduce the 2015 Homecoming Court.

Friday, PHS students will get ready to support their Pirate football team, who are 1-0 in league games as they take on the Henley Hornets (1-0) for the Homecoming game. Kickoff begins at 4:00pm for JV and 7:30 for varsity. The week is wrapped up on Saturday with the Homecoming dance taking place in the PHS commons October 10th from 8-11pm. Admission to the dance is $10.
