PHS Choirs Prepare for Concert

By Trinity Mathis, Danika Meer, and Ariana Segura

The Phoenix High School choirs have been practicing for their first concert, happening on November 3rd 2015 at 7:00pm in the theater here at Phoenix High School. Both the chamber choir and concert choir have been rehearsing ever since the end of September for this concert and they are hoping for it to be a great start for them.

The chamber choir will be singing two pieces by themselves and the concert choir will only be singing one. Both choirs together are singing about six songs. The songs that the chamber choir are singing are called “Shenandoah” and “Jamaican Market Place.” The concert choir is singing a song called This Old Hammer.” The songs that both choirs are singing together are called “Requiem,” “Corner of the Sky,” “Just a Single Voice,” “Count on Me,” and “Amavolovolo.”

During the concert there is also going to be a few soloists. One solo is for the song “Jamaican Market Place” and the soloist for that song is Miranda Lee. For the song “Corner of the Sky there is a solo sung by Jirah Brammer and Mollie Bach.

The song “Requiem was made after the devastating Asian tsunami in 2004 and was also sung for other terrible situations such as the tsunami in Japan in 2009. Some students, along with Mr. Rhoades, are making a video to go along with the song as a tribute.

The choir students are really excited for their first concert of the year, as is Mrs. Nordquist. She has been working hard teaching the students the songs for this concert.  The students have been learning about eight songs in total, but it takes a lot of time to rehearse and perfect all of these songs. Come to the concert on November 3rd 2015 to support your PHS choirs and cheer them on!
