Junior College Night

April 28th, 2017

Many students believe that they don’t have to worry about college or scholarships until their senior year of high school but it is never too soon to start getting ready for your future. Phoenix High School’s college counselors Michelle House and Sonia Lemacks are hosting the Junior College Night on Tuesday April 25th, 2017; along with Erika Ledesma who will be there to help and translate for our Spanish speaking families.

As mentioned by Mrs. House the college advisers want this to be a resource for those students whose parents didn’t go to college and don’t have older siblings to help them. The Junior college night is also directed towards the parents to help them understand a little more how to help their child when that point of their lives approaches.

A lot will be covered during the junior college night such as; the types of colleges there is, what is the SAT test and ACT test, the admissions timeline which helps juniors see what dates certain colleges expect to receive their applications. Another thing that will be covered during this event is how to find the right match, that just means they’re  going to help the students how to figure out what choice is right for them, there will be some special guests like ARMY recruiters and the Admissions director from both SOU and OIT.

Many students worry about financial aid but that will only be covered briefly because at the beginning of their senior year they have something called “Financial Aid Night” which goes more in depth about how they can receive help when it comes to paying for college.

Since this is only the second year Phoenix high puts this event together, the college advisers don’t have many expectations only “a few more families than last year” (Mrs. House). Remember Juniors it is never too late to start thinking about your future.
