A Day in the Life of…

Phoenix high school has many teachers that do more than just teach. From teachers that sing, lead in clubs, and play an instrument with the band, there are a few teachers that we at PHTVNEWS would like to recognize. Where there’s a sport, there’s a coach. Mrs.Flores, Mrs.Campbell, and Mr. Buckley all coach a sport as well as teach here at phoenix, though there are many more that coach around the school. Being a teacher and coach is a huge responsibility in the sense that both require full commitment. How do they do it?

Well, Mrs. flores teaches Algebra, geometry, and health, while coaching girls volleyball and basketball. During my interview with her I got a chance to ask some questions we’ve all been wondering. “ I get as much done during my prep period as I can.” Flores said, when asked how she juggles grading assignments and still making it to practices. Now I know why teachers have at least one during their school day. I asked Flores,“Did you ask to coach the sports, or were you asked to coach?” She responded with“I asked to coach volleyball, but was then asked to coach Basketball as well.” Mrs. Flores is a valued and great teacher here at our school, if you ever see her around, never hesitate to say hello! Also, If you want to join volleyball or basketball, do it!

The next teacher I thought We’d recognize was Mr. Buckley. Mr. Buckley is new addition to the pirate team this year as it is his first year. Mr. Buckley teaches Economics, world history, and U.S history. He also coaches the boys JV basketball team, as well as the 8th grade football team at talent middle school. I asked Mr. buckley what he does to manage times between games, practices, and grading.“ I spend extra time after games and practices grading when I can” he told me. Buckley encourages everyone to come to games during this upcoming basketball season. Mr. Buckley is a fantastic teacher and we hope he makes Phoenix High School his home for teaching in the following years.

Finally, a teacher that is not only a coach and a teacher, but also a soon to be mother, Mrs. Campbell! Mrs. Campbell teaches body works, Emergency care, fitness & toning, health occupation lab, and Rec. P.E. As a coach, Campbell Coaches cross country, and track. As for managing times, Mrs.Campbell has a prep period during first period which helps her get a lot done regarding grading and setting up lessons, but she takes a lot of work home. She likes to set up a lot of reminders for times, dates, and deadlines. Campbell asked to coach track, though Mr. Cornet, the cross country coach, asked her to co-coach cross country with him. If Mrs. Campbell could give any teacher advice on wanting to coach she’d say “It is worth doing but you have to set aside time to make it work. Time is the biggest piece of the puzzle” well said Campbell.

Those are just three of the other eight more we have at our school. Our school is very thankful to have these great teachers and coaches to be with us through our academic, and athletic careers. So be sure to thank all athletic and academic staff through the sport seasons because if it wasn’t for them, there would be no sports programs at the school.
